Orthodox religionists used the word to refer to people in the society who didn’t share similar religious beliefs. The term is believed to have emerged for the first time in the 16th century.
The use of the term narrowed in application as skeptical inquiry, free-thought and criticism of religion increased and became more widespread. Persons living in the 18th century during the Enlightenment Age were among the first people to identify themselves as atheists.
“Unprecedented atheism” during the French Revolution saw the first political movement of its kind in history to advocate for human reason supremacy.
Atheism arguments cover social, philosophical and historical techniques or approaches. Some arguments for disbelief in the existence of deities include the issue of evil, lacking empirical evidence, the rejection of concepts that can’t be made false, inconsistent revelations, and nonbelief.
Atheism, according to nonbelievers, is more parsimonious than theism, and nobody is born with belief in deities. Atheisms, therefore, argue that the proof burden lies on the theist to offer theism rationale, but not atheists to disprove gods’ existence.
Atheism has no conduct code or ideologies to comply with, but some individuals adhere to secular philosophies such as secular humanism.
Atheism concepts vary, making it hard to estimate the precise number of atheists worldwide or in the U.S. alone. A 2012 Win-Gallup International study reported that 13% of respondents were “convinced that they were atheists” while 9% and 11% only were “convinced to be atheists” in 2017 and 2015, respectively.
However, larger surveys obtained lower figures for similar studies. A 2004 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) survey reported that about 8% of the population worldwide is atheist. Other studies reported 2% for “convinced atheists” and 12% for the irreligious.
East Asia and Europe, according to the studies, have the highest population of atheists. About 61% of the Chinese reported being atheists in a 2015 poll.
On the other hand, 20% of the population in the European Union was reported to be atheist based on a Euro-barometer poll conducted in 2010. They didn’t believe in any “God, spirit or force in life.” The figure of Swedish atheists, according to the poll, was 34% and that of France 40%.
